🍁🍹 National Caesar Day

Canada’s Signature Cocktail

National Caesar Day is celebrated on the Thursday before the May long weekend, and it’s a proudly Canadian excuse to raise a glass to one of our most iconic cocktails: the Caesar.

Bold, savoury, spicy, and endlessly customizable, the Caesar is more than just a drink -  it’s a national tradition.

🇨🇦 What Is a Caesar?

Often compared to a Bloody Mary, the Caesar stands apart thanks to its unmistakable Canadian twist. It’s made with:

  • Vodka

  • Clamato juice (tomato + clam)

  • Worcestershire sauce

  • Hot sauce

  • Ice

  • A celery salt–rimmed glass

Classic garnishes include celery and lime, but Canadians are known to take things much further.

🕰️ A Canadian Original

The Caesar was invented in 1969 by bartender Walter Chell at the Calgary Inn in Calgary, Alberta. Tasked with creating a drink to celebrate the opening of a new Italian restaurant, Chell drew inspiration from the flavours of spaghetti alle vongole (pasta with clams).

By swapping tomato juice for Clamato and adding bold seasonings, he created a cocktail that would go on to become a Canadian classic.

🌶️ Why Canadians Love It

The Caesar’s rise to fame didn’t stop in Alberta. Its popularity spread coast to coast, helped by:

  • Its bold, savoury flavour profile

  • Endless customization options

  • Clever marketing from Clamato producers

  • Its perfect pairing with brunch, patios, and long weekends

Today, it’s a staple in Canadian bars, restaurants, and homes - with over 400 million Caesars enjoyed each year in Canada.

🥓 Garnish Like a Canadian

From classic to outrageous, Caesar garnishes are where creativity shines:

  • Pickles, olives, and pepperoncini

  • Bacon strips or beef jerky

  • Shrimp, sliders, or even full skewers

  • Rim upgrades: smoked salt, steak spice, Old Bay

There are no rulesonly flavour.

🎉 How to Celebrate National Caesar Day

  • Mix up a classic Caesar at home

  • Host a DIY Caesar Bar with multiple garnishes

  • Try a spicy or extra-dry variation

  • Sip one on the patio and kick off May long weekend properly

National Caesar Day is a celebration of Canadian cocktail culture, bold flavours, and not taking brunch too seriously.

So rim that glass, pile on the garnishes, and toast to a drink that could only be born in Canada.
Cheers, eh! 🍁🥂
